Windtech «Combat SC»

It is designed to have the best possible peformances in the Serial Class category without giving up the easy and accesible handling of an intermediate wing. It's quite allongated with unsheated lines and the leading edge is equipped with secondary reinforcements sewn in a double fabric socket. It is built in a long wear and strong fabric (tough a Lite version is an option). It has thin risers and a powerful speed system. You can not confuse with the Combat of pure competition which is much more allongated with 3 sets of lines on the bottom floor and 4 in the top floor. This one is faster but more demanding altought the leading edge without the SAS system makes it very ligth during inflation.

The Combat SC is certified in D class because the brake travel, otherwise it will be C (competing with the sport category and the Class 2).

Under the name "Combat" there are 3 different wings for the spanish brand Windtech. The first one was the 2006 competition wing that this year it has been replaced for another one with a higher A/R, a high vault and more performances. However the Combat SC appears in the middle of these two. It is not a version of the first or last competition model but a glider specifically designed for the Serial Class searching the handling and the safety of a class 2 wing. You may think this is a non realistic goal but in this case it has been accomplished.

The easy inflation and the stability and handling of this wing is amazing, it does belong to the intermediate class but performances and speed are in level of the best performance wings.

There are only two sizes, both are a little small and the vault is quite flat. It has 4 thin risers and an elliptic plan-form with a high aspect ratio and the wing tips almost simetric. This glider has floating reinforcements in the intercells leading edge and this is the most distinctive aspect of this wing. The are named SAS and are sewn in a double layer pocket of fabric in the top and bottom surface giving more tension and definition to the front of the profile. It has diagonal trapezes and the line set up is in 3 floors of unsheathed aramide and dyneema. Thin risers with a kevlar core, the maillons are covered with termo plastic and there is a plastic ring to maintain and guide the lines in its place. The speed system is a double pulley with a dyneema rope. The soft brake handle has not swivel and has a magnetic connection.

It is manufactured in Skytex 44 gr/m2. It offers durability and long weariness but adds a little more weight in the rucksack. Windtech is thinking to offer a light version in thin fabric and dynema rope risers as an option. This one will be two kg lighter for the same performances.

The openings so reinforced show a leading edge preinflated which make the preparation and the launch easy, although it may fold itself and you then have to wait for a blow of wind to launch.

There is no problem to control the wing when ground handling. Since this is a fast glider you must really run to take off and when there is wind you have to apply some brake to stop the wing to overshoot you.

Airborne you note the high trim speed (more than 40 km/h), the direct and fast handling making the control precise, comfortable and not exigent. the wingtips torsion are a little negative and some times they loose tension when load is removed when you apply weight shift in turns. This is why ears come in easily and flatter when they are big.

Once it is fully accelerated is very compact an the tips have lot of preassure and maintains a good glide to the limit. The leading edge fabric in between the main profiles comes in a little and does not show signs of tucking. Speed and handling are the strongest points. The external brake is easy to dose to increase the turn speed and the banking angle. You have to conserve a high speed when turning but you can also brake a lot the wing for slow turns but the banking angle is then blocked. The brake travel is not long and the stall is inside the travel and it becomes heavier before the stall point but not so much.

It is quite easy to do big ears, they come in easily. Once they are in the speed goes up and they come out pumping with the brakes. B stall is a little hard the first centimeters, asfter that is quite light. Exit is clean with a little surge forward and an gradual recovery of the speed.

It it amazing its ability for climbing, in spite of being so small, the speed at trim and fully accelerated and the glide angle. All these performances are among the best in its class but its reactions are good and it is not as exigent as a domestic competition model. This is the best performance-safety ratio in all the Windtech gliders we have ever tested, and it refines the qualities of Tecno (the class 2)

The competition version (FR) increases the A/R by 10'% (same projected aspect ratio). It has 3 rises that branch off into 4 in the C line top floor. The leading edge is lighter (no S.A.S reinforcements) it glide more and it is faster (44-65 km/h) and the sink rate is improved. The brake travel is short and technical and it is more demanding. It inflates easy -is light- is quite stable with the speed system, it surges forward little and performance-wise is amazing.

With this wing Suby Lutolf and Juan Cedrón achieved great results in the Spanish championship.
